WNA British Dies in Depok Detention Room, Immigration: Suicide
Tangerang - The Directorate General of Immigration of the Ministry of Immigration and Correction has confirmed that a foreign citizen (WNA) from England with the initials DJR (53) who died in the detention room of the Depok Immigration Office was suspected of committing suicide.
Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko said the conclusion was obtained based on the results of internal investigations and forensic autopsies.
"We have investigated and autopsied, the results indicate that the person concerned died by suicide," said Hendarsam, quoted by Antara Friday, April 24.
He explained that DJR had only been in detention for two days related to violations of residence permits before he was found unconscious in the bathroom of the detention room on Tuesday, April 21.
According to Hendarsam, the victim's psychological condition is suspected to be one of the factors.
"It is possible that he is depressed because he has only been in the detention room for two days," he said.
Previously, DJR was secured by immigration officers on April 20, 2026 for immigration checks. At the time of the incident, the administrative process related to the issuance or repatriation of the person concerned was still ongoing.
Depok Immigration has informed the family of the victim who is in Indonesia of the incident, and has coordinated the handling of the body.
"We have communicated with the family to determine whether the body will be repatriated to the country of origin or buried in Indonesia," said Hendarsam.
This case has become a concern regarding the supervision and psychological condition of the detention room residents, although the Immigration has confirmed that the handling process has been carried out according to procedures.
