Pramono Partners with Shenzhen Metro, Promotes TOD Acceleration and Development of MRT Jakarta
JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is exploring cooperation in the development of transportation and transit-based areas with Chinese metro operators. This step is taken to catch up with the capacity of transport and strengthen urban mobility integration.
The Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung, held a bilateral meeting with the Shenzhen Metro Group in Shenzhen. The meeting discussed opportunities for the development of modern and sustainable transit-oriented development (TOD) in Jakarta.
"We want to have a comparison of the effectiveness of the MRT in various cities in the world. Shenzhen is a reference because of its service and operational efficiency," said Pramono in his statement, Thursday, April 23.
He highlighted the significant difference between the performance of rail transport in the two cities. The Shenzhen Metro is said to be able to serve up to 13 million passengers per day with a network of around 635 kilometers. Meanwhile, the Jakarta MRT currently serves around 128 thousand passengers per day.
According to Pramono, this gap is the basis for accelerating the development of the MRT as well as the TOD area in Jakarta.
"This is urgent, because the mobility in and out of Jakarta reaches around 4 million people per day. MRT must be developed as a long-term solution to overcome congestion while supporting the integration of agglomeration areas," he explained.
This cooperation was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding between PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) and Shenzhen Metro Group. The focus includes the development of TOD areas and integrated urban transportation systems.
The President Director of MRT Jakarta, Tuhiyat, assessed that collaboration is important to strengthen the city development model based on transportation.
"This MoU is a step to solve the problem of modern cities while locking future economic growth," said Tuhiyat.
From the Shenzhen Metro side, Deputy Party Secretary and General Manager, Huang Liping, said Jakarta's approach was on the right track by making TOD the backbone of mobility.
"Our experience shows that when metro planning is done from the beginning, it not only moves people, but also shapes the economy, urban space, and property values. We support the strengthening of the Jakarta-Shenzhen partnership in sharing best practices to build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable city," said Huang Liping.
