Palembang Regional Hospital Corruption Perpetrator Released from 6 Months in Prison, in Exchange for 120 Hours of Community Service
PALEMBANG - The Palembang District Attorney's Office (Kejari), South Sumatra, gave a sanction in the form of social work to a defendant in a case of embezzlement at the Palembang Bari Hospital.
The Head of the Palembang District Attorney's Office, Muhammad Ali Akbar, during the handover of the defendant at the Palembang Bari Hospital, said the defendant was Rio Aberico Bin Thomas.
"The defendant received this sanction because of the application of plea bargaining or guilty plea in handling criminal cases as an effort to realize a more effective, efficient and humane justice system," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, April 23.
According to him, this implementation is the first time in the legal territory of South Sumatra, especially the City of Palembang, as well as the national level and this mechanism is based on Law Number 20 of 2025 concerning the Code of Criminal Procedure (KUHAP).
In the trial held on April 1, 2026, the defendant admitted all his actions.
The panel of judges in the trial ensured that the defendant's confession was made without pressure and had provided explanations regarding the legal consequences and rights that were lost in the mechanism.
Based on the agreement approved by the panel of judges, the defendant was sentenced to six months in prison which was converted into a social work sanction for 120 hours.
The defendant is scheduled to undergo the sanction at the BARI Palembang Hospital for a duration of two hours per day for approximately two months.
Meanwhile, in the handover, Kajari Palembang Muhammad Ali Akbar was greeted directly by the President Director of Palembang Bari Hospital, Amalia.
The President Director of Palembang Hospital Bari Amalia, added that his party welcomed this.
He said that he would supervise the defendants who were serving social work sentences and would report to the Palembang District Attorney's Office periodically.
