Trump's Special Envoy Proposes Italy to Replace Iran at the World Cup, Trying to Persuade PM Meloni to Refer?

JAKARTA - The US Special Envoy for Global Partnerships, Paolo Zampolli, proposed that Italy replace Iran in the upcoming World Cup, following tensions between the leaders of the two Western countries.

On March 31, Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third time in a row after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"I confirm that I have advised (US President Donald) Trump and (FIFA President Gianni) Infantino that Italy should replace Iran in the World Cup. I am an Italian who dreams of seeing the Azzurri perform in the US-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have a track record to justify their participation," Zampolli told the Financial Times on Wednesday, April 22, reported by ANTARA from Sputnik.

The report notes Trump is pushing soccer diplomacy to improve ties with Italy, a key NATO ally, following a dispute over military bases and Trump's criticism of the Pope.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni earlier criticized Trump's statement that cornered Pope Leo. Meloni and Trump were previously close allies.

On April 21, Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali stated that there was no decision regarding the participation of the national team in the World Cup.

Previously, in early April, Trump attacked Pope Leo XIV for criticizing the US and Israeli actions against Iran.

He had said he did not want a Pope who was critical of him, even claiming the Pope would not lead the Catholic Church if it were not for him being in the White House.

But last week, Trump insisted he had no personal issues with the Pope, while stressing his right to dissent.
