1.777 Fire Points Observed in Indonesia, the Most Potential for Karhutla in Riau

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warns of the potential for an increase in forest and land fires (karhutla) as the dry season enters a number of regions in Indonesia, with 1,777 locations recorded. This risk is strengthened by the possibility of the occurrence of the El Nino phenomenon in the second semester of 2026.

Head of BMKG Teuku Faisal Fathani said that some parts of Indonesia are now entering the dry season. Meanwhile, the weak to moderate El Nino phenomenon is estimated to have a 70-90 percent chance of occurring in the second half of this year.

"The potential for forest and land fires (Karhutla) depends very much on the accuracy of data and the optimization of preventive efforts, one of which is through atmospheric intervention in weather modification operations (OMC)," Faisal said in a written statement, Thursday, April 23.

BMKG data as of April 21, 2026 recorded that the number of fire points in Indonesia has reached 1,777 locations. Riau and West Kalimantan provinces are the regions with the most hotspots.

This figure is higher than the same period in previous years, so it increases vigilance against the potential for forest fires.

As a mitigation step, the government is currently conducting weather modification operations (OMC) in Riau and West Kalimantan. This effort aims to increase the groundwater level, especially in peatlands, so that it is more resistant to the risk of fire when rainfall decreases.

BMKG emphasizes the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration in dealing with the potential of forest fires, ranging from weather monitoring to prevention efforts in the field.
