The Community is Encouraged to Participate in Strengthening the Indonesian Carbon Market

JAKARTA - PT Bursa Efek Indonesia (BEI) launched the "I am Net-Zero Hero" campaign, which aims to encourage active participation of the community/individuals in implementing a low-carbon lifestyle and strengthening the development of the national carbon trading ecosystem through the Indonesian Carbon Exchange (IDXCarbon).

This launch is the commitment of the IDX to expand the participant base of the carbon market not only from corporations but also individuals, as well as supporting the transition to an inclusive and sustainable low-carbon economy.

"Through "Aku Net-Zero Hero", the Stock Exchange wants to open space for the public to contribute directly to reducing emissions, because the transition to net zero is not only the responsibility of corporations, but a joint movement of all levels of society," said Director of Finance, Human Resources, and General Affairs of the Stock Exchange, Risa E. Rustam, quoted by Antara.

Through this campaign, Risa explained, individuals are invited to take three main steps, namely calculating emissions from daily activities, reducing emissions through lifestyle changes, and offsetting emissions by purchasing carbon credits from green projects listed on IDXCarbon.

"This campaign also emphasizes the principle of reducing first, prioritizing emission reduction before offsetting. This campaign raises the perspective of climate justice to increase understanding that the impact of climate change is not felt evenly, so that its handling requires fair and inclusive collective participation from all stakeholders," said Risa.

In its implementation, the IDX partnered with a number of strategic partners, including PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk through the Livin' Planet feature, Pertamina NRE which provides SPE-GRK to be used as an offset for emissions at the launch event, and Jejakin as a provider of solutions for calculating and offsetting emissions.

Through this collaboration, the public can easily calculate carbon footprints, set emission reduction commitments, and make offsets directly through a digital platform integrated with IDXCarbon.

"This ease is strengthened through the concept of retirement on behalf on IDXCarbon, which allows individuals to buy carbon units and offset emissions through intermediary companies or platforms," said Risa.

With this mechanism, each individual will still receive a certificate in their own name that is officially recorded, directly or indirectly, in the National Climate Change Control Registry System (SRN PPI) owned by the state.

IDXCarbon recorded a positive performance trend, reflected by the increasing participation of individuals in carbon trading.

Out of the total 2,065 beneficiaries who have offset more than 1.3 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, 1,566 of them are individuals or retailers. In addition, there are 40 activities that have also offset emissions through IDXCarbon.
