Join TikTok and Meta, YouTube Expresses Commitment to Comply with PP TUNAS
JAKARTA - The Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Meutya Hafid, announced that YouTube has conveyed its commitment to comply with the child protection rules in the digital space (PP TUNAS) that apply in Indonesia.
In a compliance letter that was submitted to the Directorate General of Digital Space Supervision of the Ministry of Komdigi last Friday, YouTube will implement a minimum age restriction of 16 years on its platform.
"Next, YouTube has provided a plan to deactivate accounts (under 16 years old) and also at the same time convey that it will eliminate in the future also advertisements that target children and adolescents," said Meutya in a press conference on Wednesday, April 22.
Currently, YouTube has updated its Community Guidelines specifically in Indonesia, which includes:
"The Government of Indonesia has issued Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 concerning the Implementation of Electronic Systems in Child Protection ("PP Tunas"). PP Tunas stipulates a minimum age requirement of 16 years to have an account on an electronic system operator that is determined as "high risk" under the PP Tunas framework.
YouTube is committed to complying with applicable legal obligations under the Tunas PP, and is gradually taking the necessary and relevant steps during the transition period. We continue to engage in active dialogue with the Ministry of Communication and Digital to ensure that our protection system is fully aligned with regulatory expectations for YouTube in Indonesia.
YouTube will update its minimum age requirements in accordance with the provisions of PP Tunas. If you are under 16 years old in Indonesia, access to your YouTube account may be disabled. We are aware that the change in the minimum age to access YouTube has important implications for users, and we will ensure that users receive adequate information and updates before any impact on their YouTube access in the next few months."
Thus, Google through its YouTube platform, became the seventh digital platform that has delivered its commitment to comply with child protection regulations in the digital space in the country.
However, YouTube has not revealed how many accounts of children under 16 years old will be affected by this new rule. However, they promised to report to the Ministry of Communication as soon as possible.
"We are still working closely with Komdigi during this process. So we will also convey the details to Komdigi during the implementation process. So in the near future there will be new updates again," said Head of Government Relations and Public Policy, YouTube Asia Pacific, Danny Ardianto.
