Use iPhone 17 Pro Max, Artemis II Astronauts Share 'Earth Set' Moment from the Moon

JAKARTA - The commander of the Artemis II mission, Reid Wiseman, immortalized many moments while flying around the Moon's orbit. If earlier he shared photos, now Wiseman shared a video he recorded.

The video taken using the iPhone 17 Pro Max captures the moment of earthset, similar to the sunset that humans on Earth usually see. This is the first earthset moment recorded with a mobile phone.

In the 53-second video, Wiseman shows the Earth slowly sinking from behind the Moon. To clarify the details of the Moon's crater and the Earth's arch simultaneously, Wiseman took advantage of the zoom feature on his device.

Although the iPhone 17 Pro Max took some time to focus, the footage managed to show a clear and stable view. Wiseman explained that the video display he shared was very similar to what he saw directly while in space.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I couldn't resist recording a video of the Earth setting with my phone," Wiseman said via his personal account on the X platform, quoted on Tuesday, April 21.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is not the only device allowed to be taken into space. Other astronauts are also known to take pictures with professional devices such as Nikon cameras with a 400mm long lens.

The documentation shared shows that mobile devices are already qualified for space travel. However, astronauts can only use the camera feature without activating the network and Bluetooth.
