Rano Karno's Fish Sapu-Sapu Proposal Processed into Charcoal After Being Arrested

JAKARTA - Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Rano Karno proposed processing sapu-sapu fish into charcoal after being caught. This proposal emerged to reduce waste from mass arrests that have ended up being thrown away.

Rano said that the option was inspired by practices that had been carried out in Brazil in dealing with similar issues. Rano will coordinate with the DKI Jakarta Environment Service regarding the preparation for its implementation.

"There is a temporary proposal, this has been done by Brazil. That it turns out that this mop fish in Brazil is also a problem, but it turns out that he can be another component. It can even be charcoal. Well, that was yesterday I sent it to the LH Office. 'Let's try to make it like this'," said Rano at the DKI Jakarta City Hall, Tuesday, April 21.

He admitted that the previous sweep fishing operation produced an amount that was beyond expectations, up to almost 7 tons. This made the local government need to think about the next steps so that its handling did not cause new problems.

According to Rano, the sapu-sapu fish control program will continue to be carried out because it is considered to cause various problems in Jakarta waters. However, the handling method will be improved, including in the destruction process.

"So, let's try to do something, but maybe yesterday the term was that there were many burials that were not dead of all kinds. For that, maybe we will just fix it later," said Rano.

For follow-up operations, Rano emphasized that the fish caught must be ensured to be dead first before being processed further. At the same time, the government continues to open opportunities for the use of processing technologies such as those applied in Brazil.

"It must be extinguished first, that's it. But actually, the technology that was done by Brazil, it turns out that it can be processed and even can become a material like charcoal, that's amazing," he added.
