Hungary Withdraws from ICC, Will Israeli PM Netanyahu Be Arrested?
JAKARTA - The new Hungarian government plans to suspend the withdrawal process from the International Criminal Court or ICC.
The leader of the Hungarian election winner, Tisza Peter Magyar, said his government intends to stop the process by June 2 at the latest and maintain Hungary's membership of the ICC.
"I have conveyed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that we will not leave the ICC," Magyar said at a press conference reported by ANTARA from Sputnik/RIA Novosti, Tuesday, April 21.
He also emphasized that ICC member states must comply with the court's arrest warrant, including detaining the individual being sought while in their territory. The ICC issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu in 2024.
Previously, the Hungarian parliament in May 2025 approved the withdrawal from the ICC. The then Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, assessed that the ICC had changed from a neutral institution to a politicized organization.
In November 2024, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu and former Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in the Gaza Strip.
The ICC Pre-Trial Chamber rejected Israel's objections regarding the court's jurisdiction to investigate the situation in Palestine and issued an arrest warrant for its citizens.
