Boni: National Police Chief Expands Police Role in the Economic and Digital Sectors

JAKARTA - Senior Political Analyst Boni Hargens assessed that the National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo showed a proactive and multidimensional leadership in supporting the Prabowo-Gibran government agenda, not only in the security sector, but also in the economy, social, and digital.

According to Boni, throughout April 2026, the National Police Chief carried out a number of strategic steps that reflected the expansion of the role of the National Police in supporting national stability and economic growth.

"The National Police Chief has shown a leadership approach that not only focuses on law enforcement, but also contributes to development, including strengthening tourism, digital security, and maintaining the investment climate," Boni said in a statement, Monday, April 20.

One of the steps highlighted was the presence of the National Police Chief at the 2026 Wondr Kemala Run in Bali which was attended by around 11,000 runners. The activity was not considered merely a ceremonial, but part of a strategy to encourage the sport tourism sector as an economic driver for the region.

Boni assessed that the involvement of the National Police in the activity strengthened public confidence while providing security guarantees for tourists, both domestic and foreign.

"This reflects the soft policing approach, where the National Police is present as a facilitator of development and community welfare," he said.

In addition, Boni identified four strategic agendas for the National Police throughout April 2026. First, strengthening synergy with the Ministry of Communication and Digital to face the increasing complexity of cybercrime, disinformation, and violations of laws in the digital space.

Second, the formation of the Hajj Task Force (Satgas) to ensure the safety and smooth running of the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage. This step is considered important considering the large number of Indonesian pilgrims and the dynamics of security in the Middle East region.

"The Hajj Task Force is an important instrument in ensuring the protection of pilgrims from departure to return to their homeland," said Boni.

Third, strengthening relations with the labor community to maintain the stability of industrial relations. According to Boni, this step is important in creating a conducive investment climate while protecting workers' rights.

Fourth, the affirmation of the importance of national unity in the midst of increasingly complex global geopolitical dynamics. Boni assessed internal stability to be a key factor for the sustainability of national development.

"The emphasis on national unity shows the role of the National Police in maintaining social cohesion and preventing polarization in society," he said.

Boni concluded, the combination of these agendas reflects the direction of the Polri policy, which is increasingly adaptive to the challenges of the times, with a role that goes beyond the functions of conventional police and is directly intertwined with political and national economic stability.
