Don't Ignore, This is the Cause of a Headache After Lunch

JAKARTA - Many people experience headaches after lunch and often consider it trivial. In fact, this condition should not be ignored, because it can be a sign of something wrong with the body.

"Headaches after lunch are more common than many people imagine. However, this should not be ignored, especially if it happens regularly," said fitness trainer, Varnit Yadav, quoted from Only My Health, Monday, April 20, 2026.

There are several causes that can trigger the occurrence of afternoon headache, as follows.

1. Too rapid spikes and drops in blood sugar

The most common cause of a midday headache is a drastic change in blood sugar levels after eating. This spike is then followed by a rapid drop, which can trigger a headache.

"After eating, blood sugar can rise quickly, especially if the food is high in simple carbohydrates such as white rice, bread, or sweet foods," said Yadav.

Therefore, it is important to choose a balanced lunch menu, which contains complex carbohydrates, protein, and vegetables.

2. Dehydration

Another cause is dehydration, which is often not realized. Lack of this fluid is the main trigger for headaches, especially during the day.

"Many people forget to drink water while eating. Dehydration is a common trigger for headaches," he said.

If the body is deficient in fluids, the blood flow to the brain can be disrupted, which triggers a headache. Thus, it is important to ensure that fluid needs are met throughout the day, not just when you feel thirsty.

3. Sensitivity to certain foods

Some people have an unacknowledged sensitivity to certain types of food. Foods such as cheese, processed meat, or foods containing additives such as MSG can trigger headaches in some people.

"If you see a pattern, for example, a headache appears after eating certain foods, try to avoid it and see if the condition improves," he explained.

4. Poor posture and stress

In addition to food, lifestyle can also trigger a headache at lunchtime. Such as eating in a hurry because you have to finish your work, bad posture, to stress, all of which trigger headaches.

"Lunchtime is often rushed, and people immediately go back to work. Poor posture and stress can also cause a tension headache after eating," concludes Yadav.
