Arteta Not Disappointed After Arsenal Lost to Manchester City: There Are Still Five Games Left
JAKARTA - Mikel Arteta hinted that the English League competition started again after Arsenal were defeated by Manchester City on Sunday, April 19, 2026, but insisted that the Gunners still believe they can win the title.
Erling Haaland's 65th-minute winner gave Manchester City a crucial 2-1 victory in a tense game at the Etihad Stadium to close in on leaders Arsenal by three points.
The Citizens also still have one more match than the Gunners. If Pep Guardiola's children win against Burnley on Thursday, April 23, 2026, early morning WIB, Manchester City will displace Arsenal from the top of the standings for the first time since the opening week of the season.
The match was actually fierce. Kai Havertz equalized two minutes after Rayan Cherki's opening goal in the 16th minute.
The German also had a chance to score in the 1-1 draw and had another golden opportunity in injury time to save a point when Arsenal were 1-2 down.
However, the defeat leaves Arsenal facing a 22-year wait for a title that will continue into next season after finishing runners-up in the previous three seasons.
"The English league starts again, almost. They have one game left, we are three points ahead, five games left, so the game is still open."
"Anything can happen. So we know how we won it. We won't stop and we will keep going, that's for sure."
"Today if they need more confidence, I think they have more confidence now. They talk about it in the dressing room," Arteta said.
Arteta further stressed that he did not need to raise the spirits of the squad whose mentality had been repeatedly questioned.
"If I had to pick a player to win the Premier League with five games to go and be in the Champions League final, I think I would have to be at home."
"So, that's not the issue. It's not necessary. It's never been necessary, even in difficult times. So, we'll (try) again, that's for sure."
"Obviously, they are very disappointed not to get a result from the game (against Manchester City) in that way."
"That's the feeling that immediately comes across when they talk about it. They say, we lost the opportunity today, but we have the biggest opportunity now in the next five games, so let's do it," said Arteta.
