Addicted to Online Gambling, Minimarket Employee Steals Rp52 Million in Cashbox
JAKARTA - An employee of a minimarket in the Kebon Jeruk area, West Jakarta, was arrested by the police after breaking into the store's safe and taking away Rp52 million in sales proceeds for online gambling (Judol).
The Head of the Resmob Sub-Directorate of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Polda Metro Jaya, AKBP Resa Fiardi Marasabessy, said the case was revealed after the CCTV footage of the perpetrator's actions circulated on social media.
"The Resmob Sub-Directorate of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Metro Jaya Police has managed to uncover a case of theft of money from sales at a minimarket located in the Kebon Jeruk area, West Jakarta," he told reporters, Friday, April 17, 2026.
Resa said the incident occurred on Sunday, February 22, 2026. At that time, the perpetrator on duty at night took cash from the safe on the second floor of the minimarket.
"After taking the money, the perpetrator immediately deposited it into his personal account through an ATM machine located inside the minimarket," said Resa.
The theft was discovered after the store found a discrepancy in the daily deposit report. From the results of checking the CCTV, said Resa, the identity of the perpetrator was then known.
"The CCTV footage shows clearly the moments when the perpetrator carried out the action," he said.
The Opsnal team of the Subdit Resmob then conducted an investigation and hunted down the perpetrators who had fled for almost two months. The perpetrators were finally arrested without resistance at his hiding place on Jalan SD Bojong, Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta, on Monday, April 13, 2026.
"The perpetrator admitted that he was determined to carry out his actions because of his addiction to online gambling. According to the suspect's confession, the money of tens of millions of rupiah was gone in just three hours," said Resa.
In addition to securing the perpetrator, the police also confiscated evidence in the form of a mobile phone, jeans, shop uniform, and CCTV footage.
The perpetrator was charged with Article 477 of the Criminal Code of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning theft with a maximum penalty of seven years in prison.
