Brazil Warns of the Division of Power Between the US President and Congress on War Decisions

JAKARTA - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva asserted that US President Donald Trump has no right to threaten other countries in the dispute he started in the world.

Lula reminded the US that it has a constitution that divides authority related to war and foreign policy in Congress and presidential decisions.

"Trump has no right to wake up in the morning and threaten a country!" Lula said in an interview session published by Spanish daily El Pais on Thursday local time, quoted by AFP.

Lula's scathing criticism comes after Trump this month threatened to destroy Iran until "the whole civilization would die" if the country did not open the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump also spread other threats against his allies in NATO member countries who refused to participate in the US-Israel war against Iran.

"It is very important that the ruling leaders take greater responsibility in maintaining peace," said the 80-year-old president.

Lula and Trump, 79, are on opposite sides on issues including multilateralism, international trade, and the fight against climate change.

Brazilian-US relations remain tense, although the two leaders met last year in an effort to strengthen ties and agreed to reduce US trade tariffs.
