Suddenly, Mascherano Left Inter Miami after 4 Months of Winning the MLS Cup
JAKARTA - Javier Mascherano has resigned as head coach of Inter Miami, just four months after leading the club to their first MLS Cup title.
Inter Miami said in a statement on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, local time that the Argentine coach had resigned for personal reasons.
Mascherano officially communicated his decision to the club after the 2-2 draw at home against New York Red Bulls on Sunday, April 12, 2026 WIB.
The club said Guillermo Hoyos will take over as head coach of the first team for upcoming matches, switching from his current role as Inter Miami's sporting director.
"I would like to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF."
"First and foremost, I want to thank the Club for the trust they have given me, every employee who is part of the organization for the collective effort, but especially the players, who have allowed us to experience unforgettable moments," Mascherano said in a statement, reported by ESPN.
Mascherano - a former teammate of Inter Miami star Lionel Messi in Argentina and Barcelona - spent almost a year and a half in charge after replacing Gerardo "Tata" Martino in November 2024.
The former Argentina U-20 coach took Inter Miami to the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup and the final of the League Cup (MLS Leagues Cup) and he made history when he lifted the MLS Cup in his first year with the club in 2025.
Inter Miami are third in the Eastern Conference after seven games of the 2026 season, but were knocked out of the Concacaf Champions Cup after losing to Nashville SC.
Mascherano's departure comes less than two weeks after Inter Miami opened its new stadium near Miami International Airport. The club has drawn its first two games at the new facility.
"Javier will forever be a part of the Club's history and will always have a special place in the Inter Miami CF family."
"Not only because he was a key part of unforgettable achievements, such as winning the MLS Cup and the team's historic appearance in the Club World Cup (2025), but also because of the example he set through his dedication and hard work on a daily basis in leading the team."
"We respect his decision and are very grateful for all his contributions, wishing him the best for his professional and personal future," said Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas.
Hoyos took over this role after working as a coach and sports director in various leagues around the world, including the Liga MX, and served as head coach of the Bolivian National Team.
Inter Miami's head of football, Alberto Marrero, will take over Hoyos' previous responsibilities as the club's sporting director.
