Gas-powered in China, Hyundai prepares IONIQ and 2 concept cars to conquer the NEV market

JAKARTA - Hyundai Motor Company is getting more serious about tapping into the Chinese automotive market, which is considered to have great potential, especially in the pure electric vehicle segment. This step is marked by the launch of the IONIQ brand in Beijing, as well as reaffirming Hyundai's ambition to compete in the increasingly competitive new energy vehicle (NEV) market.

Not only presenting the IONIQ line, Hyundai also brought two concept cars that will be exhibited at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show. The two models are the VENUS Concept and the EARTH Concept SUV, which represent Hyundai's design and technology direction in the future.

"Based on the IONIQ principle of prioritizing safety and world-class quality, Hyundai will soon introduce mass-production models that combine a cabin and intelligent driving experience according to the wishes of Chinese consumers," said President of Beijing Hyundai Motor Company, Li Fenggang, through an official statement, Wednesday, April 15.

The presence of the VENUS Concept and the EARTH Concept SUV at once marks a new chapter for the South Korean manufacturer in designing electric vehicles that are more relevant to the needs of the Chinese market. Both cars are also the initial foundation for the development of the mass-produced version of the IONIQ model in the future.

Carrying the philosophy of "Lead, don't follow", Hyundai presents a design with a strong and easily recognizable single-curve silhouette approach. This approach is expected to provide a distinctive visual identity while creating a strong first impression on the road.

"We chose to be 'The Origin'. Something that is completely new, easily recognizable at a glance from a distance, has a strong presence on the road, and presents what we call the 'best first impression'," said Senior Vice President and Head of Hyundai Design Center at Hyundai Motor Company, Simon Loasby.

Along with this launch, Hyundai also confirmed its commitment to providing a comprehensive mobility experience in China, not only in terms of products but also the user ecosystem. One of the strategies carried out is the use of a new naming pattern for the IONIQ line, using "planet" names that reflect a customer-centric approach.

In addition, Hyundai plans to embed exclusive technology tailored to the local market's characteristics. Among them are autonomous driving systems resulting from collaboration with partners in China, as well as the implementation of extended range electric vehicle (EREV) technology that is already quite popular among local consumers.

Through this approach, Hyundai is optimistic that it can strengthen its position in the midst of fierce competition, both from global manufacturers and local brands that have adopted similar technologies first. This strategy is also proof of Hyundai's commitment to re-compete with an approach that focuses more on the real needs of consumers in China.
