Anticipating El Nino, Pramono Orders Tree Pruning in All of Jakarta

JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung asked the City's Parks and Forests Service (Tamhut) to accelerate the pruning or pruning of trees throughout the capital. This step is taken as an anticipation of the impact of extreme weather due to the El Niño phenomenon.

According to Pramono, tree pruning is important to minimize the risk of trees falling which can endanger residents, especially during strong winds or extreme weather changes.

"I ask that more should be prepared are the trees. Indeed, if it is not done well, this will definitely happen like the last time," said Pramono at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Cikini, Central Jakarta, Wednesday, April 15.

He ensured that the current penoping process has begun on the ground as part of early prevention measures. "So that penoping, cutting, tidying, is now being done," he continued.

Pramono alluded to previous experiences when extreme weather conditions triggered various disturbances in Jakarta, including the risk of trees falling. Therefore, he asked his staff not to repeat the same negligence.

In addition, he also highlighted the high rainfall that had hit several areas of Jakarta in recent times. The heavy rain had triggered flooding, especially in border areas.

"Yesterday when there was quite a lot of rainfall, including on the border between East Jakarta and Bekasi and so on, which caused flooding in some places, although shortly afterwards we were able to overcome it," he said.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the current global climate condition is still in the neutral phase with the ENSO (El Nino-Southern Oscillation) index of around +0.28. However, in the second semester of 2026, this condition has the potential to develop into a weak to moderate El Nino with a chance of reaching 50-80 percent.

The head of BMKG, Teuku Faisal Fathani, explained that the dry season and El Nino are two different phenomena that do not always occur simultaneously. However, if the two intersect, the impact can exacerbate drought in a number of regions in Indonesia.

"It needs to be understood that drought and El Nino are two different phenomena. Drought still occurs every year, but if El Nino is present at the same time, then the drought condition will be much drier," said Faisal in a coordination meeting at the Ministry of Public Works, Jakarta, Monday, April 13.

He emphasized that the potential for drier conditions in 2026 needs to be anticipated early on, especially in the management of water resources so that there is no inequality between flooding when there is excess and drought when there is a shortage.
