IBM and ARM Announce Collaboration to Develop Future AI Hardware

JAKARTA - IBM announced its strategic collaboration with ARM, a British semiconductor company, in developing a new dual-architecture hardware that is capable of running future AI and data-intensive workloads.

Through this collaboration, IBM and ARM will combine the strengths of each company, with IBM being able to deliver a reliable, secure, and easily developed system, and ARM's strengths in energy-efficient architecture, expertise in supporting various workload needs, and a broad software ecosystem.

This effort aims to present a more flexible and ready-to-grow computing platform to meet future needs, while prioritizing higher reliability and security.

"Our collaboration with IBM continues this development by bringing the ARM ecosystem to a very crucial enterprise environment, while providing more flexibility for organizations in implementing and developing these workloads," said Executive Vice President, Cloud AI Business Unit, ARM, Mohamed Awad.

This collaboration will focus on three main areas. First, the two companies are exploring the development of virtualization technology that allows Arm® based software environments to run on IBM's enterprise computing platform.

Second, IBM and ARM are exploring new approaches to address the performance and efficiency demands of modern workloads, including AI and data-intensive applications, which include the development of enterprise systems that are capable of recognizing and running ARM applications, with the goal of ensuring that ARM-based environments can be aligned with the reliability, security, and operational requirements that companies need.

Finally, this collaboration also focuses on long-term ecosystem growth. By building a shared technology layer between platforms, IBM and ARM aim to open access to a broader software ecosystem as well as provide greater flexibility in the deployment and management of applications.

"This reflects IBM's approach of consistently anticipating enterprise needs long before major changes in the market occur, by developing capabilities early so that clients are ready for the emergence of new workloads and business models," added Chief Product Officer, IBM Z and LinuxONE, Tina Tarquinio.
