Malaysian and Australian PMs Scheduled to Meet to Discuss a Number of Issues

JAKARTA - Australian Prime Minister (PM) Anthony Albanese is scheduled to pay an official visit to Malaysia from Wednesday (15/4) to Friday (17/4) and meet with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to discuss a number of bilateral issues to the Middle East conflict.

"Prime Minister Albanese will be accompanied by Foreign Minister (Menlu) Penny Wong and senior government officials," according to a statement from the Malaysian Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) in Kuala Lumpur, Tuesday, April 14, reported by ANTARA.

Anwar Ibrahim will welcome Albanese with a Formal Reception Ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex, Putrajaya, on Thursday (16/4), followed by a limited meeting between the two leaders.

The two will discuss energy security, trade and investment, as well as cooperation on renewable energy and green technology.

In addition, Ibrahimdan Albanese will also discuss the conflict in the Middle East as well as the impact of the emerging energy crisis and its implications globally, especially for Malaysia and Australia.

"In this context, the two leaders are expected to increase diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and ensure the continuation of global trade routes and energy supply chains that are important for the welfare of their people," said the Wisma Putra statement.

The two leaders will also witness the exchange of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the Halal Red Meat Strategic Partnership between the Government of Malaysia and the Government of Australia, represented by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Australia (DAFF).

An official lunch reception in honour of PM Albanese will also be held at the Seri Perdana Complex.

Malaysia stated that Australia remained an important trading partner. In 2025, Malaysia and Australia each ranked as the 12th largest trading partner of each other.

Total bilateral trade in 2025 reached 78.63 billion ringgit (Rp314 trillion), with export and import values of 48.64 billion ringgit (Rp194 trillion) and 29.99 billion ringgit (Rp119 trillion).

Malaysia and Australia have upgraded their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) in 2021, which provides a framework for exploring new areas of cooperation under the three pillars, namely economic prosperity, people and technology, and regional defense and security.
