Rupiah is expected to strengthen, geopolitical pressure still overshadows

JAKARTA - The rupiah exchange rate on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 is expected to strengthen against the US dollar.

To note, quoting Bloomberg, on Monday, April 13, the spot rupiah exchange rate closed at a weakened level of Rp17,105 per US dollar.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (Jisdor) exchange rate of the Bank Indonesia (BI) closed down 0.05 percent to the price level of Rp17,122 per US dollar.

Doo Financial Futures analyst Lukman Leong said the rupiah has the opportunity to strengthen against the US dollar as market sentiment improves and global oil prices fall.

"The rupiah has the potential to strengthen against the US dollar amid a recovery in market sentiment, and a decline in world oil prices. 17050-17150," he told VOI, Tuesday, April 14.

Lukman estimates that the movement of the rupiah on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 will be in the range of Rp17,050-Rp17,150 per US dollar.

Meanwhile, money market observer Ibrahim Assuaibi, assessed that market sentiment was under strong pressure due to the failure of peace talks between the United States and Iran.

He added that the failure triggered further steps from the US, where President Donald Trump stated that the US Navy would begin a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, following the failure to reach an agreement after long negotiations.

This condition also increases the risk of the continuation of the ceasefire which had previously lasted for two weeks.

The United States Central Command announced that the blockade would begin at 10 a.m. ET on Monday, covering all sea traffic entering and leaving Iranian ports.

This policy is applied comprehensively to ships from various countries operating in the Iranian port and coastal areas, including the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

"US forces will not impede freedom of navigation for ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports, and additional information will be provided to commercial sailors through official notifications before the start of the blockade," he said.

On the other hand, Ibrahim said the Iranian Revolutionary Guard warned that any military vessel approaching the Strait of Hormuz would be considered a violation of the ceasefire and would be dealt with firmly.

Ibrahim predicted that the rupiah would move fluctuatio on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 in the price range of IDR 17,100 to IDR 17,150 per US dollar.
