Borobudur Morning Vesak, Government Promotes "Living Heritage" Status

JAKARTA - The celebration of Vesak at Borobudur Temple this year is special. The peak is no longer at night. The moment of Vesak falls at noon, at 15.44 WIB, on May 31, 2026. The government sees this momentum to affirm Borobudur as a living cultural space, not just a tourist site.

Minister of Culture Fadli Zon expressed support for the plan when receiving representatives of the Indonesian Buddhist Community in Jakarta, Monday, April 13.

The change in time shifts the pattern of the procession. The series begins in the morning, continues to Dharmasakti, and ends with the release of lanterns at 19.30 WIB.

Deputy Chair of the Karuna Murdaya Committee confirmed that this shift had been calculated in the entire series of events. "This year's Vesak moment falls at 15.44 WIB. Therefore, our main procession is adjusted, starting from morning to evening," said Karuna.

He ensured that the main stages would continue. The taking of the Dharma Fire in Mrapen, Grobogan, and holy water in Umbul Jumprit, Temanggung, remained an important part. Social activities also continue to be held. "We will continue to carry out all the series, including social service and other supporting activities," he said.

On the government side, attention does not stop at the implementation of the event. Fadli Zon emphasized the direction of managing Borobudur. "The celebration of Vesak is in line with efforts to make cultural heritage a living heritage," he said.

This means that Borobudur is not only treated as a monument. The historical narrative is strengthened, the artifacts are equipped, and the collection is beginning to be digitized. A number of artifacts are also planned to be brought to areas such as Pujon so that they are more easily accessible to the public.

The change in the celebration time opens a new perspective on Borobudur. Not only as a location for annual rituals, but as a center of cultural activities.

Also present at the meeting were the Director General of Cultural and Traditional Protection Restu Gunawan and Bhante Srivisarn as daily executors.
