OpenAI asks macOS users to update their apps, including ChatGPT and Codex

JAKARTA - OpenAI requires all macOS users to immediately update their applications to the latest version. This needs to be done to avoid serious security risks.

This decision was made after the artificial intelligence (AI) company identified a hacking attempt through a third-party developer tool called Axios. The Axios library was hacked in late March 2026.

Launching from Reuters, OpenAI's automated system had downloaded a malicious version of Axios that had access to the application's security certificate. The certificate is used to sign official applications, such as ChatGPT Desktop, Codex, and Atlas.

Even though they had downloaded malicious software, OpenAI confirmed that they did not find any indication of user data theft. They also ensured that the company's intellectual property and basic software code remained safe and unchanged.

OpenAI also confirmed that user passwords and API keys were not affected by this technical issue. The main problem, which stemmed from a configuration error in the GitHub Actions workflow, has now been completely resolved.

As a protective measure, OpenAI is now updating their security certification to prevent the distribution of fake applications in the future. It should be noted that starting May 8, 2026, old versions of the macOS application will no longer receive support and may stop working completely.
