Iranian Ambassador: Negotiations Must Continue for Indonesian Ships to Pass through the Strait of Hormuz

JAKARTA - Iran's decision to accept Pakistan as a mediator in peace negotiations with the United States is based on good faith and Pakistan's concrete steps to implement a ceasefire.

"The Prime Minister of Pakistan (Shehbaz Sharif) has made many efforts for a ceasefire in the Gulf region," said the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi after the launch of a book commemorating the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Jakarta, Saturday, April 11.

Ambassador Boroujerdi said in his efforts, Prime Minister Sharif intensively dialogued with Iran and convinced Tehran to stop the attack and return to the negotiating table.

At the same time, PM Sharif had a dialogue with the Americans and persuaded them to negotiate with Iran.

Ambassador Boroujerdi added that Pakistan did not forget to offer to host peace talks between the US and Iran in an effort to conduct dialogue.

"Pakistan is trying to convince us and our opponents to then negotiate in Pakistan," he said.

Therefore, Iran decided to accept Pakistan's offer as a mediator for peace negotiations with the US in the midst of many countries or world figures offering themselves as mediators for negotiations, including Indonesia.

As is known, the US and Iranian delegations began "direct" talks in Islamabad on Saturday to reach a permanent ceasefire.

The talks came after Pakistan helped secure a two-week ceasefire between Iran and the US, according to a report by Anadolu News Agency.

The meeting was held at a military location with tight security and under the control of the Pakistani army. The negotiations are likely to last more than one day.

The Iranian delegation for the negotiations includes, among others, the Speaker of Parliament Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister (Menlu) Abbas Araghchi, Secretary of the National Security Council Ali Akbar Ahmadian, and Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati.

Meanwhile, the US delegation consists of Vice President J. D. Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, as well as representatives from the State Department, Pentagon, and US National Security Council.
