HD Hyundai Completes the World's First Ammonia-Fueled Ship
JAKARTA - HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has completed the construction of two ammonia-fueled vessels, which are said to be the first in the world's shipping industry.
Quoted from a Yonhap report, Thursday, April 9, two medium-sized gas carriers with dual ammonia fuel systems are scheduled to be delivered by July at the latest to the Belgian shipping company Exmar and its affiliate, Exmar LPG France.
According to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) roadmap for a carbon-neutral world, the share of ammonia as a fuel for ships is expected to rise to 8 percent by 2030 and 46 percent by 2050.
HD Hyundai Heavy also stated that it had bagged a total order of eight ammonia-fuelled vessels from Exmar and multinational commodities trading company Trafigura.
The company previously delivered the world's first methanol-fueled petrochemical product carrier in 2016, as well as a methanol-fueled container ship in 2023.
HD Hyundai Heavy is targeting to strengthen its position in the environmentally friendly shipyard market.
HD Hyundai Heavy and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries are shipyards affiliates of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), the holding company of South Korea's shipping group, HD Hyundai.
