DPR RI welcomes the US-Iran ceasefire, urges Donald Trump to ensure Israel does not break promises
JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sukamta, gave a positive response to the ceasefire agreement between the United States (US), Israel, and Iran.
Although welcoming, Sukamta emphasized that this humanitarian pause should not only be a temporary artificial breath, but a bridge to permanent peace in the Middle East region.
Sukamta reminded that the stability of the world today depends heavily on the commitment of major countries to stop aggression.
"We welcome this ceasefire and hope it can continue permanently. The world needs stability and more importantly, no more countries that commit aggression against other countries," said Sukamta as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
However, this politician gave a critical note to Israel's track record in previous agreements. He highlighted the frequent violations of commitments by the Israeli side, both in the conflicts in Palestine and Lebanon.
Sukamta also asked US President Donald Trump to act decisively as a guarantor of the agreement.
"This is dangerous for the realization of regional peace. The parties concerned, especially President Donald Trump, must ensure that Israel refrains from and complies with the ceasefire agreement," said Sukamta.
On the other hand, Sukamta hopes that this momentum will be a gateway for resolving the fundamental problem, namely Palestinian independence.
According to him, without a sovereignty solution for the Palestinian people, the escalation of the conflict will continue to recur in the future.
Beyond political issues, he also reminded the Indonesian government to strengthen national resilience in the energy and economic sectors, given that global conflicts have now spread to systemic pressure in the Strait of Hormuz, which has a direct impact on world trade.
"Our hope is simple, but fundamental: this ceasefire can be permanent, there is no more aggression between countries, and the rights of the Palestinian people can be fulfilled in the form of a legitimate and internationally recognized independence," he concluded.
Previously, President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran that included reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Responding to this, the Supreme National Security Council of Iran (SNSC) confirmed that further diplomatic talks with the United States would begin immediately on Friday, April 10, 2026, in Islamabad, Pakistan.
