Soybean Prices Rise, DKI Provincial Government Says It Is Caused by US Turbulence and Rupiah Weakening

JAKARTA - The price of soybeans in Jakarta has increased in recent times. The increase occurred at the level of craftsmen of tofu and tempe to traditional market traders, triggered by global factors and the exchange rate of the rupiah.

Head of the DKI Jakarta Food, Maritime, and Agriculture Agency (KPKP) Hasudungan Sidabalok said that the price of soybeans at the artisan level is now in the range of Rp. 10,500-Rp. 11,000 per kilogram, up from the previous Rp. 8,000-Rp. 8,600 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, at the traditional market level, the price of soybeans is in the range of Rp. 15,000-Rp. 20,000 per kilogram, from previously Rp. 13,000-Rp. 18,000 per kilogram.

"The price increase is due to global dynamics related to the turmoil of the largest soybean exporting country, the United States, and the declining rupiah exchange rate," Hasudungan told reporters, Wednesday, April 8.

This price increase has been felt since the month of Ramadan in February 2026 and is still continuing until now with a fluctuating pattern.

"Based on field monitoring, the team of enumerator officers and DKI Jakarta agricultural statistics officers found that the price of soybeans began to emerge since Ramadan in February 2026 and has continued to fluctuate until now," said Hasudungan.

Jakarta's dependence on imported soybean supplies also strengthens the impact of rising global prices. Most of the soybean needs in the capital are supplied from abroad, with a small contribution from domestic producer areas such as East Java, Central Java, and West Java.

"Soybean commodities in DKI Jakarta are widely used by tofu and tempe craftsmen under the DKI Jakarta Indonesian Tofu Tempe Producer Cooperative Center (Puskopti) which is also included in the Indonesian Tofu Tempe Producer Cooperative Association (Gakoptindo)," he explained.

To mitigate the impact of rising prices, local governments are urging the public to start adjusting consumption patterns with alternative food ingredients that have balanced nutritional value but are more affordable.

"Residents of DKI Jakarta can also carry out urban farming activities to increase family food security independently at home," he added.
