UK PM Flies to Middle East to Welcome US-Iran Ceasefire

JAKARTA - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is scheduled to depart for the Middle East to meet with leaders of Gulf countries today, Wednesday, April 8.

Starmer's visit comes amid a two-week-long US-Iranian ceasefire deal announced by both sides.

"I welcome the ceasefire agreement reached last night, which will bring relief to the region and the world," Starmer said, quoted by The Telegraph.

The Prime Minister's Office said Starmer was scheduled to "discuss diplomatic efforts to support and enforce a ceasefire" with representatives in the Middle East.

Starmer added that his visit was to encourage a long-term ceasefire agreement between Iran and the US, including maintaining the opening of the 20 percent supply line for the world's energy across the Strait of Hormuz.

"Together with our partners, we must do everything we can to support and sustain this ceasefire, turn it into a lasting agreement, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz," Starmer continued.
