Trump Confident China Will Push Iran to Agree to a Ceasefire with the US

JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump said his faith in China helped Iran negotiate a ceasefire.

"I heard yes," Trump said in a phone call when asked by AFP whether China was involved and encouraged Iran as a key ally to negotiate a ceasefire with the US, Wednesday, April 8.

Asked to comment on reports that China had pushed Iran toward a ceasefire,

Commenting on the matter, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, Liu Pengyu, told CNN that since the US-Israeli war against Iran began, China has "tried to help achieve a ceasefire and end the conflict."

"China welcomes all efforts conducive to peace," said Liu Pengyu.

"We hope that the parties concerned will take advantage of the opportunity for peace, bridge the differences through dialogue and end the conflict as soon as possible," he continued.

CNN has contacted the Chinese Foreign Ministry for comment. However, it has not received a response.

Previously, China played a key role in brokering peace between Iran and its longtime rival, Saudi Arabia, in 2023.
