Trump agrees to a ceasefire with Iran for 2 weeks if the Strait of Hormuz is opened
JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump said he had agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday night, April 8 local time.
The US's recognition of the ceasefire came less than two hours after Trump's threat to destroy "the whole civilization" in Iran at 20.00 local time.
Trump said the ceasefire agreement was made on the condition that Iran agrees to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the supply route for 20 percent of the world's oil and gas.
"Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, from Pakistan, and where they asked me to hold back the destructive force sent tonight to Iran, and on the condition that the Islamic Republic of Iran agrees to a FULL, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend bombing and attacks on Iran for two weeks. This will be a two-way ceasefire! ", Trump wrote on the social media Truth Social, quoted from CNN.
Trump then claimed the reason for agreeing to a ceasefire with Iran was that the US military operation in this war had succeeded and Iran had submitted 10 points of ceasefire proposals.
"The reason we are doing this is because we have met and exceeded all military objectives, and are very far along in reaching a definitive agreement on long-term peace with Iran, and peace in the Middle East," Trump continued.
"We received a 10-point proposal from Iran, and believe that it is a basis that can be applied to negotiate. Almost all of the points of contention in the past have been agreed upon between the United States and Iran, but the two-week period will allow the agreement to be completed and realized. On behalf of the United States, as President, and also on behalf of the countries of the Middle East, it is an honor to see this long-term problem almost resolved," claimed Trump.
The press conference took place at the White House regarding the development of the US-Israeli war vs Iran at 18.44 on Tuesday, April 8. Since then, Trump has not been seen in public.
