Real Madrid Loses in the Champions League, Diaz and Kane Win Bayern Munich

JAKARTA - Real Madrid fell at home. In the first big match of the Champions League quarter finals at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, Wednesday, April 8, 2026 WIB, Madrid was forced to surrender to Bayern Munich with a score of 2-1. The duo of Luis Diaz and Harry Kane was the determinant of Bayern's victory in the away game.

Bayern showed the best performance in the big match between the two seeded teams in the Champions League. Even Bayern, who is currently touted as the strongest team in Europe, played very well, especially in the first half, at the opponent's home.

Even though they have a very bad record because they have never won in the last nine meetings in European competitions, Bayern seems to ignore it. They actually want to break that bad record with maximum play.

As a result, Vincent Kompany's team was able to create several opportunities that threatened Madrid's goal. Not only that, Bayern also managed to take the lead in the first half which made them more confident when completing the next round.

Madrid themselves were only able to narrow the gap through Kylian Mbappe. Furthermore, their attempts to equalize the score did not bear fruit so that the Spanish LaLiga elite team had to admit the opponent's advantage at home.

A disappointing result for Madrid as they suffered two consecutive defeats in different competitions. Previously, Madrid had to admit Mallorca's 2-1 lead in LaLiga. The defeat made Madrid further behind Barcelona in the league title race.

The bad trend of the team coached by Alvaro Arbeloa continued when playing in Europe. Playing in front of their own supporters, Los Merengues even lost by the same score 2-1.

Even though they lost the opportunity, they are not closed. There is still one more match but it will be held at Bayern's home at the Allianz Arena Stadium, Munich, Thursday, April 16, 2026 early morning WIB. Only, the 15-time Champions League champion must chase the goal deficit if they want to turn things around.

Meanwhile, Bayern only needs a draw to advance to the semifinals. This makes Die Bayern more favored because they are playing at home.

In this 29th big match, Bayern really performed well. Even though they were playing at home against a strong European team, they still played offensively. Bayern also threatened Andriy Lunin's goal who replaced Thibaut Courtois who was still injured. Defender Konrad Laimer's shot only bounced slightly over the crossbar.

Even the leader of the German Bundesliga standings should have been ahead when defender Dayot Upamecano got a slick pass from Kane. Lunin's goalkeeper was also fooled so that he actually had to put the ball into the net. But there was still defender Alvaro Carreras who made a brilliant save. He managed to throw the ball that had slid into the net.

Madrid was not without opportunities. The duet of Mbappe with Vinicius Junior threatened the Bayern defense through good attacks. Mbappe got a good chance but goalkeeper Manuer Neuer could stop it. So did Vinicius Jr's attempt. Neuer again stopped it.

The former German national team goalkeeper did show his best performance. He made another save when Mbappe was about to finish the opportunity given by captain Federico Valverde.

After both teams took turns attacking through open play, Bayern finally managed to break the deadlock when Diaz broke into the Madrid goal in the 41st minute.

The goal started from a one-two between Serge Gnabry and Kane who had passed through the defender Trent Alexander-Arnold before releasing the pass forward. The ball was greeted by Diaz who escaped the offside trap and calmly fired a shot that defeated Lunin. Score 1-0 for Bayern and the lead lasted until the first half ended.

The goal also lifted the spirits of the Bayern players when entering the second half. It turns out, they immediately hit Madrid's defense and were able to score a goal that increased Bayern's lead when the match was only one minute.

Through an attack, Michael Olise who approached the Madrid penalty box then gave the ball to the middle. The ball was greeted by Kane with a hard kick from outside the penalty box.

The result was that the England national team captain's kick conquered Lunin who changed the score to 2-0. This is Kane's 11th goal in the European competition this season. Kane has also bagged 49 goals in various competitions.

Behind by two goals, Madrid tried to come back. At least, the hosts got chances through Vinicius Jr and Mbappe. But again, Neuer managed to thwart the two chances.

After many failed attempts, Mbappe finally managed to overcome the deadlock. Starting from Alexander-Arnold's action who also joined the attack, the former Liverpool defender then delivered a cross aimed at Mbappe. The opportunity was immediately taken by the captain of the French national team who broke Bayern's goal in the 74th minute.

The score changed 2-1 which made the Madrid players rise and try to equalize the score. However, the efforts of Los Blancos did not bear fruit and the score remained until the end of the match. Bayern also has good capital when hosting Madrid in the second match.
