Microsoft Invests IDR 170.8 Trillion to Strengthen AI and Cloud Infrastructure in Japan

JAKARTA - Microsoft announced plans to invest 10 billion US dollars (Rp170.8 trillion) in Japan. This large investment is aimed at expanding the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure.

This project is scheduled to run from early 2026 to 2029. Through this investment, Microsoft wants to support digital transformation in Japan while forging strong partnerships with local companies.

Reportedly, Microsoft will partner with local companies such as SoftBank Group and Sakura Internet to realize the project. This collaboration is expected to accelerate the adoption of technology in various Japanese industrial sectors.

"We can provide the support that Japan's economy needs for the future," Microsoft Vice Chairman Brad Smith told Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in a meeting, quoted through AA on Tuesday, April 7.

Smith emphasized that this initiative is designed to provide full support for Japan's future economic growth. Strengthening digital infrastructure is considered a key to facing increasingly tight global technology competition.

This move also expands Microsoft's commitment, which was valued at 2.9 billion US dollars (Rp49.5 trillion) in 2024. This larger capital addition is focused on increasing data center capacity and cloud computing service capabilities.

The presence of more capable AI infrastructure is believed to trigger more new innovations from local start-ups. With the availability of a wider data center, Japanese business actors can enjoy faster and safer computing services.
