SMPCS Biak – Jayapura Cable Breaks, Telkom Speeds Up Maintenance

JAKARTA - PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk is accelerating efforts to recover the Biak-Jayapura Sumatran Maluku Papua Cable System (SMPCS) cable system.

Vice President of Corporate Communication Telkom, Pujo Pramono said that Telkom continues to strive to accelerate the connection of the SMPCS cable so that people can return to enjoying TelkomGroup services comfortably as before.

“In the process of joining cable later, there will be power outage of the repeater on SMPCS link of Sorong-Manokwari-Biak line. This blackout has no effect on TelkomGroup services, especially in the Biak and Manokwari locations because adequate backups are available," said Pujo in a written statement as reported by Antara, Saturday, June 5.

Telkom will attempt the blackout avoiding prime time so that the ease of Telkom service usage remains stable.

"We apologize if there are services that are not optimal during the repair process, in order to try to connect the cable again and customers get the maximum TelkomGroup service experience," said Pujo as reported by Antara.

As an effort to restore services in Jayapura as a result of the disconnection of the Sumatra Maluku Papua Cable System (SMPCS), Telkom has dispatched the DNEX Pacific Link (DPL) Cableship which will connect the SMPCS submarine cable for the Biak-Jayapura section. This SMPCS submarine cable broke at a depth of 4,050 meters on the Biak-Jayapura section which resulted in disruption of services in Jayapura and its surroundings.

The DPL ship is a ship specifically designed for the need for laying and repairing submarine cables.

The ship which weighs up to 7,000 tons is equipped with the best technology such as Dynamic Positioning 2 (DP2) for automation systems with full redundancy, Remote Operated Vehicles (ROV), and plough.

The ship has the capability of operating to a depth of 10-6,000 meters and can sail non-stop for up to 60 days.

The DPL ship has been at the breaking point location since May 30, 2021, at 23:21 central Indonesia time, and has conducted an analysis of current conditions, sea contours, and shipping patterns.

Currently, the ship is pulling the cable to Biak/Sorong, which will then continue to Jayapura.

SMPCS submarine cables use repeater technology due to the long distances that require high voltage. During the cable connection process later, it is necessary to turn off the repeater but it does not affect the service because the backup system has been prepared.

To ensure service quality, especially for customers in Biak and Manokwari, Telkom Indonesia has prepared a backup link that can meet service needs under normal conditions, where the average traffic for the Biak-Manokwari-Sorong link reaches 40 Gbps with peak times occurring on 20:00 to 22:00, while at other times the total traffic is below 40Gbps.

For this reason, Telkom has provided backups using the East Palapa Ring sections of Biak-Manokwari-Sorong and Nabire-Timika each 2x10 Gbps, bringing the total to 40 Gbps.

The submarine cable repair process is directly supervised by Telkom Infra, a subsidiary of Telkom Indonesia, and is targeted to complete the reconnection of the submarine cable in early June 2021.
