Observer: There are Indications that America and Israel are Undermining the UN's Legitimacy
JAKARTA - The United Nations through the Secretary-General and the Security Council expressed condolences while stressing that peacekeepers should not be targeted. The European Union as well as a number of countries such as France also strongly condemned the incident as a violation of international law.
Geopolitical observer, Fauzan Luthsa, assessed that the narrative that is developing in the public needs to be seen more broadly in the context of global geopolitics. According to him, there are indications of a major agenda that targets the legitimacy of the UN's role in maintaining world peace.
"There are indications of a cunning tactic to weaken the role of the UN. Attacks on peacekeepers cannot be seen as ordinary incidents," he told VOI, Thursday, April 2.
Fauzan also highlighted that in recent times, the United States and Israel have often criticized the United Nations, which is considered potentially undermining the legitimacy of the international institution.
"The narrative that attacks the UN and undermines its role is already visible. This is dangerous because it can weaken the global security system," he said.
Fauzan also revealed that Indonesia had previously postponed certain agendas at the international level, which he referred to as part of the dynamics of global diplomacy. He assessed that these steps showed Indonesia's caution in responding to complex global situations.
"Last month Indonesia postponed the BOP, and this must be seen as part of a strategic dynamic, not a weakness," he explained.
Furthermore, Fauzan assessed that attacks on UN peacekeepers could potentially be part of a larger agenda. He added that this condition must be a serious concern for the international community so that there is no wider escalation.
"There is a suspicion of a malicious agenda to weaken the world's peace forces. If the UN is weakened, then the global mechanism to maintain peace is also threatened," he said.
