Indonesia asks the UN Security Council to be firm, Ambassador Umar: There must be no more attacks
JAKARTA - Indonesia has asked the United Nations Security Council (UN) to act, act and speak firmly, to protect peacekeepers and there should be no more attacks against them.
This was conveyed by the Indonesian Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Umar Hadi, during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council at the UN Headquarters, New York, United States on Tuesday.
The meeting was requested by Indonesia together with France, following the death of TNI soldiers who served as peacekeepers in the Konga XXIII-S Task Force under the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon on March 29 and 30.
"The safety and security of peacekeepers must remain our top priority," Ambassador Umar said at the meeting, quoted from UN Web TV (1/4).
Furthermore, Ambassador Umar said, amid the escalating escalation, the Security Council and the Secretary-General must immediately implement emergency measures to ensure full protection for UNIFIL personnel and assets.
"This includes reviewing the security arrangement protocol and activating emergency and evacuation plans in accordance with developments in the field," he explained.
"We must use all political and diplomatic means to defuse the situation," continued Ambassador Umar.
"The Security Council must reaffirm the basic principles that guarantee the safety and security of UN peacekeepers," he said.
Furthermore, Ambassador Umar said, "it is important for the Council and the wider international community to take immediate and decisive action to protect those who protect peace."
On this occasion, Ambassador Umar also ensured that "Indonesia remains committed to contributing to the maintenance of peace and security" in accordance with the constitutional mandate.
Regarding this, Indonesia, he continued, demands the Security Council to act and play its role well.
"The Security Council must speak clearly, firmly and unitedly to condemn the attack on peacekeepers," Ambassador Umar said.
"The Security Council must emphasize the obligation of all parties to ensure and guarantee the safety and security of peacekeepers," he continued.
"The Security Council must take firm action to prevent hostilities and attacks on peacekeepers," he said.
"There must be no more attacks," he concluded.
As previously reported, three TNI soldiers were killed and five others were injured in two separate incidents while carrying out a UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon.
The projectile explosion near the UNIFIL facility in Adchit Al Qusayr on March 29 killed Praka Farizal Rhomadhon, while three of his colleagues, Praka Rico Pramudia, Praka Bayu Prakoso and Praka Arif Kurniawan were injured.
In the next 24 hours, two TNI soldiers on behalf of Captain Inf Zulmi Aditya Iskandar and Sertu Muhammad Nur Ichwan were killed by an explosion that hit a UN convoy near Bani Hayyan in the Monday attack. Meanwhile, two others, Lettu Inf Sulthan Wirdean Maulana and Praka Deni Rianto were injured.
Ambassador Umar emphasized that Indonesia condemned the attack on the position of UN forces, highlighting Israel's repeated attacks on southern Lebanon.
"We cannot accept the killing of these peacekeepers. This is a great loss for Indonesia. This is also a great loss for all of us, for the United Nations, for this Council, and for every community that sees peacekeepers as a symbol of hope and peace," he said.
"These peacekeepers were killed and injured while carrying out the mandate entrusted to them by this Council. Indonesia strongly condemns the heinous attacks on peacekeepers serving in UNIFIL on March 29 and 30, 2026," said Ambassador Umar.
Ambassador Umar emphasized that the increase in attacks on UN forces under the UNIFIL flag was not just an incident, but was deliberate and aimed at weakening UNIFIL to carry out the mandate of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
