DKI DPRD Soroti Zebra Cross Pac-Man in Tebet, Residents' Creativity Asked to Remain Measured
JAKARTA - The initiative of residents to paint a zebra cross with the Pac-Man character in the Tebet area, South Jakarta, has attracted the attention of the DKI Jakarta DPRD. Chairman of Commission D of the DKI Jakarta DPRD Yuke Yurike assessed that the creativity of the residents should not be turned off, but it still needs to be regulated so as not to interfere with traffic safety.
Yuke admitted that he regretted the controversy behind the action. Even so, he saw that there was a good intention for residents to contribute to improving public facilities.
He emphasized that the initiative of the residents needed to be appreciated because it showed concern for the surrounding environment. According to him, the government should instead work with residents in the management of public facilities.
"Actually, I appreciate the initiative of the residents who worked with their creativity, with the intention of possibly helping. Well, this is also what should actually be joined, invited to work together, invited to collaborate by the relevant services or the Provincial Government, because the creativity of friends and the concern of friends must also be highly appreciated," said Yuke to reporters, Wednesday, April 1.
However, Yuke reminded that the design of the zebra cross cannot be made carelessly. There are safety aspects that must be a priority, especially in locations with heavy traffic.
"If it's too fancy in risky places, that's probably my impression of why it's said to be regulated. It's dangerous when he slows down when crossing, traffic may be too dense, it's dangerous," he said.
Leibih continued, Yuke emphasized the importance of a thorough study before the policy was widely implemented. The determination of location must involve related agencies such as the police and the Transportation Service.
He also encouraged the DKI Provincial Government to make communities and residents part of the system of monitoring and reporting infrastructure conditions in the field. That way, the government's response can be faster and more even.
"Well, this is not made into a rival, we should invite them to be part of the supervision system or the task force, so if there is any information, immediately convey it to the local government together," said Yuke.
Yuke ensured that this issue would be discussed in a working meeting with the executive. According to him, collaboration between the government and the community is the key to improving the quality of public facilities in Jakarta.
