JAKARTA - The Secretary-General of the Palestinian National Initiative, Mustafa Barghouti, warned of the dangers of Israel's new law on the death penalty targeting Palestinians except for Israelis in cases of terror, especially in the occupied West Bank.

Barghouti assessed that the death penalty law passed by the Israeli parliament yesterday targeted Palestinian political prisoners and activists.

"Proposing such an unjust and inhumane law reflects the depth of the fascist shift in the Israeli system, amid the failure of the international community to impose punitive measures against it," he said in a post on X, Tuesday, March 31.

The law comes amid a surge in attacks by the Israeli military and illegal settlers on Palestinians in the West Bank, as well as thousands of arrests amid the shadow of Israel's genocidal war in Gaza.

In its rules, this law makes the death penalty by hanging as the standard sentence for Palestinians who have been found guilty of killing Israelis in the occupied West Bank. However, in similar cases if the suspect is an Israeli, the death penalty in the new death penalty law does not apply.
