EU Extends Iran Sanctions over Human Rights Abuses

JAKARTA - The European Union (EU) has extended sanctions against Iran until April 13, 2027, for alleged serious human rights violations.

"The Council today decided to extend the EU restrictive measures in response to serious human rights violations in Iran until April 13, 2027," the Council said, quoted by Sputnik, Tuesday, March 31.

In the context of reviewing sanctions, the EU Council also decided not to update the list of deceased individuals.

"The list now includes a total of 262 individuals and 53 entities," the statement said.

The measures include a ban on entry and freezing of assets, as well as a ban on the export of telecommunications surveillance equipment to Iran.

EU citizens and companies are also prohibited from providing funds to individuals and entities included in the sanctions list.

The European Union began imposing sanctions on Iran in 2011 and updates them every year.

This time, the reason for the extension of sanctions is related to alleged human rights violations by Tehran during the crackdown on the recent riots.
