PM Starmer insists Britain will not be dragged into Iran conflict: 'This is not our war'

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has insisted the UK will not get involved in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, stressing the situation is "not our war," according to the Mirror UK.

PM Starmer is said to have stressed that his government's position remains clear, despite rising regional tensions.

"It is very important for me to reiterate where I am and where this government stands because this is not our war. And we will not be dragged into it," he said as quoted by Al Arabiya (30/3).

PM Starmer continued, although it will act to protect its citizens and its strategic interests, Britain will avoid direct involvement in the conflict.

"Yes, of course we will defend British lives and interests in the region, we will support our allies in the Gulf region," he explained.

The British Prime Minister underlined that his stance was rooted in principle, saying the government would maintain its position regardless of external pressure.

"But we will not be dragged into it. Those are my values, those are my principles, and that is what we have applied to our decisions, whatever the pressure and from whoever it comes," said PM Starmer.

PM Starmer's statement comes amid growing international concerns over the widening conflict and the potential for further regional escalation.

It is known that the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran on February 28, killing more than 1,340 people, including the late Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggering tensions in the Middle East.

In response, the State of the Mullahs retaliated with drone strikes and missiles targeting Israel, along with Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets, causing casualties and infrastructure damage and disrupting global markets and flights, including tight control of the vital Strait of Hormuz through which 20 percent of the world's crude oil and liquefied natural gas pass.
