The Cost of Ships Crossing the Strait of Hormuz is Estimated to Reach Billions of Rupiah
YOGYAKARTA - The public may know the Strait of Hormuz as a sea route controlled by Iran. The assumption is indeed being talked about lately, especially after the outbreak of the conflict between America and Israel against Iran. Due to this incident, Iran restricted access to ships that would pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Even not long ago Iran was planning to impose tariffs. The cost of ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz itself is being discussed.
Cost of Ships Crossing the Strait of HormuzReported by Al Jazeera, there were reports from local media that the Iranian parliament was discussing a law regulating toll fees for ships that would pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The draft law is being prepared and the Islamic Consultative Assembly's legal team is expected to complete it soon.
"According to this plan, Iran must charge a fee to ensure the safety of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz," said a senior Iranian official, quoted by Al Jazeera, March 30, 2026.
"This is completely normal. Just like in other corridors, when goods pass through a country, import duties are paid. The Strait of Hormuz is also a corridor. We ensure its security, and it is natural that ships and tankers pay import duties to us," he added.
However, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has imposed a "toll booth" system. The system is already in place even though Iranian law does not regulate the control of the world's most important oil shipping lanes that they own.
Iranian media also reported that the parliament's plan to impose fees on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz was carried out to support shipping security.
"This is completely normal. Just like in other corridors, when goods pass through a country, import duties are paid. The Strait of Hormuz is also a corridor. We ensure its security, and it is natural that ships and tankers pay import duties to us," said the Iranian official.
It is not yet certain how much the foreign ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz must pay. However, there is an issue that the transit fee to be imposed for each ship is US$2 million or around Rp33.97 billion.
