Revitalization of Grand Hotel De Djokja, Keeping the Memory of General Sudirman's History in Yogyakarta

YOGYAKARTA - The Minister of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Fadli Zon, made a working visit to the Grand Hotel De Djokja on Sunday (29/3/2026). This visit aims to review the final progress of the revitalization of the historic room that was once occupied by the Great Commander General Sudirman in 1946.

In his review, the Minister of Culture emphasized that the room was not merely an accommodation facility, but a symbol of Indonesia's struggle. The room, which is now part of the main unit of the hotel, is being restored to restore its glory without losing its historical value.

"This space is part of the collective memory of the nation. We must ensure that revitalization not only beautifies the physical, but also strengthens the inherent historical identity," said Fadli Zon.

Revitalization of Cultural Heritage Based on Heritage

Grand Hotel De Djokja, which was built since 1911, is one of the most iconic cultural heritage buildings in Yogyakarta. Currently, the hotel is managed by InJourney Hospitality (BUMN) with a heritage hotel concept.

Some of the main points in this revitalization project include:

Historical Preservation: Maintaining the layout and important artifacts in General Sudirman's room. Architectural Authenticity: Maintaining the original building style of the colonial era heritage. Economic Balance: Turning historical buildings into productive assets that are business-relevant but still educational.

BUMN and Artist Synergy

Also present at the visit were the President Director of InJourney Hospitality, Christine Hutabarat, along with the management and a number of leading Indonesian artists. The presence of the artists is expected to provide aesthetic input so that this hotel can become a space for cultural appreciation for the wider community.

Fadli Zon hopes that Grand Hotel De Djokja can become a benchmark or example of best practices in the preservation of historic buildings in Indonesia. He wants this hotel to serve a dual purpose: as a premium tourist destination as well as a space for historical education.
