President Prabowo Arrives in Tokyo, First Visit to Japan Begins

JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto arrived at Haneda Airport, Tokyo, Sunday, March 29, 2026, to begin his first official visit to Japan since taking office as President of the Republic of Indonesia. In a written statement received by VOI, the Indonesian Presidential Aircraft-1 carrying Prabowo and his entourage landed at 19.10 local time.

Under the stairs of the plane, Prabowo was greeted by Japanese Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Iwao Horii, Head of the Japanese State Protocol Tadayuki Miyashita, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Japan Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir, and the Indonesian Defense Attaché in Tokyo Laksma TNI Hidayaturrahman.

From the airport, Prabowo went straight to the place of stay. During his stay in Tokyo, the President is scheduled to make a state call to Japanese Emperor Naruhito and meet with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

This visit is an important marker in the 68-year-old Indonesia-Japan relationship that has reached various strategic fields, ranging from economics, politics, to social culture. In recent years, relations between the two countries have also continued to show a strengthening trend.

This visit was the initial moment for Prabowo to maintain a direct line with Japan, one of Indonesia's main strategic partners in Asia. This visit is read as an effort to maintain the momentum of relations between the two countries which have been based on mutual trust and respect, while opening up new and more concrete areas of cooperation.

Previously, Prabowo departed from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, Jakarta, at 10.35 WIB. On the flight to Tokyo, he was accompanied by Foreign Minister Sugiono, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
