Millions of Americans Take to the Streets, Including Actor Robert de Niro, to Reject Immigration Policy and Iran War
JAKARTA - Millions of Americans took to the streets in the third wave of the "No Kings" national action on Saturday, March 28. Xinhua, quoted on Sunday, March 29, reported that this demonstration targeted two issues that are currently heating up politics in the United States, namely the harsh immigration policy and the ongoing war with Iran.
More than 3,100 actions were held in various cities, including Washington D.C., New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. A number of US media estimate that the action involved around 900,000 people, making it the largest one-day rally ever recorded. Organizers say the previous two waves also attracted large crowds, more than 5 million people in June and 7 million people in October 2025.
The main action took place at the Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul. Organizers said nearly 100,000 people attended despite the cold weather, while the State Patrol confirmed at least 50,000 participants.
According to organizers, as reported by Xin Hua, the protests were triggered by US military action in Iran, the death of two US citizens in January involving ICE agents in Minneapolis, as well as what they called the excessive power of the Donald Trump administration. This action was supported by a number of groups, including Indivisible, MoveOn, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations.
Independent Senator Bernie Sanders, who was the keynote speaker in Saint Paul, attacked the US war policy. He said Americans had been lied to about the Vietnam and Iraq wars, and now they were being lied to again about Iran. "This war must be stopped immediately," he said, as written by Xin Hua.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also demanded justice for Renee Good and Alex Pretti, two victims of the January incident linked to ICE. Musician Bruce Springsteen also performed and praised the resistance of Minnesota residents against government immigration policies.
In New York, the action took place in five city areas. In Manhattan, tens of thousands of people marched along Seventh Avenue carrying posters that read "No ICE", "No Kings", and "No Wars". Actor Robert De Niro, one of the organizers, said that no president before Trump had presented such a threat to the freedom and security of American citizens.
The wave of protests also spread to Washington, the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, to Arizona. In Sacramento, the rally took place amid a spike in fuel prices after the US military operation against Iran on February 28. According to the American Automobile Association, as reported by Xin Hua, gasoline prices in Los Angeles County are now approaching 6 US dollars per gallon, up more than 1.26 US dollars in a month.
In Arizona, more than 70 actions are scheduled. Local organizers believe that the government is actually pouring billions of dollars into ICE raids and tax cuts for billionaires, while many residents are having trouble paying rent and meeting their food needs.
