Anti-War Demo in Israel, 21 People Arrested, 1 Demonstrator Banged by Police

JAKARTA - The Israeli police arrested 21 anti-war protesters in demonstrations across Israel on Saturday, March 28, local time.

Those arrested were 13 protesters in Tel Aviv and eight other demonstrators in Haifa. Mass actions against the Israeli government attacking Iran were also held in Jerusalem and Beersheba.

Based on the Timesofisrael report, Sunday, March 29 local time, this wave of protests is the largest since the outbreak of the war with Iran began with the US-Israeli attack on February 28.

The increase in the number of Israeli citizens who demonstrated occurred after several groups of kitis against the Benjamin Netanyau Government provided support for the anti-war protesters.

The support was given amid the Israeli military alias IDF enforcing a policy to limit people from gathering in public spaces.

In this demonstration, a number of Israeli parliamentarians or Knesset also took to the streets against their country's decision to go to war.

At the Habima Square in Tel Aviv, demonstrators condemned the many wars Israel had started, including the decision of the parliamentary coalition to continue pushing for controversial legislation to be passed amid the battle with Iran.

The demonstrators held signs that read, "eternal war is not a strategy", "even in these difficult times, we must resist", to "demilitarize Israel first".

Israel, which often publicizes the most demonstrative state through border police, then dispersed anti-war protesters.

The police argued that the demonstrators violated the law by ignoring the Home Defense Command's regulations prohibiting outdoor public gatherings involving more than 50 people. As a result of this regulation, the Israeli police's actions are considered immune from the law, even if they are based on the pretext of violating freedom of expression.

The mass action was also marked by Israeli police repression where officers grabbed the shirt of a middle-aged male protester and then slammed it to the ground.

These Israeli demonstrators took to the streets to oppose the ongoing war and the policies of the Israeli Government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Protesters say democracy is under threat as police respond to demonstrations with violence - dragging participants away and making arrests.

Despite the growing voice of the opposition, the latest polls show that a large majority of Israelis still support the war against Iran, thus there has been a split in support in Israeli society.
