DKI DPRD Warns of Urbanization Phenomenon After Eid: Don't Come to Jakarta Without a Plan

JAKARTA - Jakarta is again crowded with people who return after celebrating Eid al-Fitr in their hometowns. Residents from outside the area are also starting to enter Jakarta to settle down. This urbanization phenomenon continues to repeat every year, with the background of the capital's position as the main destination for people from various regions to find jobs.

On the other hand, the increasing number of migrants is also a challenge for the city, especially related to capacity constraints and the potential for new social problems to emerge.

Member of Commission D of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Nabilah Aboebakar Alhabsyi, reminded the public not to come to Jakarta without proper preparation.

"Jakarta is still the prima donna, but we have to be realistic because living in this city is not easy. Immigrants must come with a clear plan, not just hoping for luck," Nabilah told reporters, Friday, March 27.

According to Nabilah, the arrival of immigrants without skills and job security is at risk of adding to the city's burden. This condition can have an impact on increasing the unemployment rate to the emergence of uninhabitable settlements.

He assessed that the problem could ultimately affect the quality of the environment and city planning if it was not anticipated from the beginning.

Therefore, Nabilah encouraged the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to strengthen the data collection system and population administration supervision. Education for prospective immigrants is also considered important, especially to provide an overview of the actual conditions of the labor market and the high cost of living in Jakarta.

With this step, he hopes that the urbanization flow can be more controlled and does not cause wider social impacts.

"Jakarta remains open to anyone, but it needs to be maintained together so that it remains orderly and livable for all citizens," he concluded.
