TNI AL considers missiles from Italy-Turkey for KRI Prabu Siliwangi

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Navy is considering Italian, French, and Turkish-made missiles to strengthen the main weapon system (alutsista) on Indonesia's newest warship, KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321, which arrived in Jakarta today.

"The plan for the missile is still under consideration, yes. There are several options. There are missiles from Italy, there are missiles from MBDA France, there are also missiles from Turkey, maybe. We are still considering it," said the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy, Admiral TNI Muhammad Ali, as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, March 26.

According to him, the issue of missiles is still under consideration, as is the type of ship sensor that will be equipped in the near future.

"But if the cannons are fixed, that's what they use," he added.

The KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321 arrived at the Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta, Thursday, after sailing from the La Spezia Naval Base dock, Italy, on February 11, 2026. Before docking in Jakarta, the ship had docked in Lampung on Monday (23/3).

The head of the TNI AL Information Service, Admiral TNI Tunggul, explained that the warship produced by the Italian shipyard, Fincantieri, was designed to carry out various missions.

The warship, he added, was also designed to be able to carry out patrol, surface, underwater, and air warfare missions; escorting important assets, maritime law enforcement operations, to humanitarian missions.

Tunggul said the KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321, which has a length of 143 meters and a width of 16.5 meters, had carried out a test to strengthen its alutsista capabilities and combat readiness before arriving in the country.

The strengthening test was carried out through structural firing of the 127-millimeter cannon during the last series of sailing before departing for Indonesia, Tuesday (27/1).

According to him, this activity is also a trial of the first firing of a 127-millimeter cannon which is part of the testing of the weapon system and the ship's structure.

"This achievement marks the first time that the TNI Navy warship has operated a gun with a Large Caliber Gun category, a caliber above 120 millimeters, operationally," said Tunggul, as reported by his press release.

He added that the warship is also equipped with an OTO Melara 127-millimeter main gun, a 76-millimeter Strales gun for medium-range air targets, 16 vertical missile launchers for air attacks, Teseo Mk-2E missiles for surface targets, anti-submarine torpedoes, to close-range automatic weapons.

The presence of KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321 is expected to strengthen the national naval defense posture and support the implementation of the main duties of the Indonesian Navy in maintaining the sovereignty and security of the waters of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
