AY Medical Struggle: RSCM Integrated Team Performs Follow-up Operation Due to Exposure to Hard Water

JAKARTA - The medical team at the National Hospital of Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM) moved quickly to carry out follow-up surgery on the patient who was exposed to hard water with the initials AY. This step was taken after intensive evaluation over the past three days showed serious complications in the patient's eye and skin tissues.

Diagnosis of Ischemia and Tissue Thinning

In clinical observations, the team of doctors found ischemic conditions, namely a lack of blood flow in the right eye sclera area of about 40%. This condition triggers the thinning of the surrounding tissue which is progressive (continuously worsening) due to the ongoing inflammatory process.

"The main focus at this time is to maintain the integrity of the right eyeball and control the inflammatory process so that it does not develop further," wrote the official statement from RSCM, Wednesday (25/3).

Multidisciplinary Medical Intervention

which took place at the Kencana Operation Room involved the collaboration of experts from the Eye Specialist and Plastic Surgery. The following are details of the actions taken:

1. Ball Eye Rescue (Eye Specialist Team):

Tissue transfer: Taking tissue from an area within the eye to close an open area.

Amniotic Membrane: The attachment of an additional amniotic membrane to stimulate healing of the thinned corneal tissue.

Maximum Protection: Re-installation of protective lenses and temporary stitching of the right eyelid to protect the eye surface during the recovery period.

2. Tissue Reconstruction (Plastic Surgery Team):

Debridement: Thorough cleaning of dead tissue on the burn area.

Skin Graft: Skin grafting is performed on the eye, chest, and shoulder areas to accelerate the regeneration of skin damaged by chemicals.

Next Steps

Currently, AY's patient is still under the close monitoring of the medical team in intensive care. The team of doctors scheduled a follow-up evaluation of the wound condition and the success of tissue grafting on Saturday, March 28, 2026.

RSCM emphasized its commitment to provide optimal medical services for the safety and functional recovery of patients from the fatal impact of exposure to chemicals.
