OpenAI Closes AI Video Creation App Sora, Partnership with Disney Officially Ends

JAKARTA - OpenAI announced plans to close Sora, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) based video creation application. This news is quite surprising because the second generation of Sora was only released last September.

"We say goodbye to Sora," OpenAI wrote on the X platform on Wednesday, March 25. "We will share more information soon, including a schedule for apps and APIs as well as details on how to save your work."

The termination of this advanced application was carried out ahead of the initial public offering (IPO). Although the reason has not been revealed, OpenAI seems to want to simplify its product portfolio to strengthen the company's financial condition before entering the stock exchange.

Sora has attracted a lot of attention since it was first launched in 2024. At that time, many parties, especially workers in the entertainment industry, were worried about Sora's sophistication in producing AI videos.

Sora's high-quality videos are considered to threaten content created by human creators. Sora's popularity can also be seen on the App Store, where the app briefly topped the download list shortly after its launch.

The closure of the Sora application certainly has an impact on the cooperation between OpenAI and Walt Disney which is worth billions of dollars. An internal source who knows this problem, launching from NBC, said that the two deals officially ended.

This agreement covers plans to bring Disney characters to the Sora platform. Although it was terminated before the contract was in effect, Disney stated that they respected OpenAI's decision to want to shift priorities to other areas.

"We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams and what we have learned from it, and we will continue to interact with AI platforms to find new ways to reach fans wherever they are," said a Disney spokesperson.
