Ogah Tertipu Lagi, Iran Tak Percaya AS Mau Berunding
JAKARTA - Iran has stated that it does not trust the United States to a number of mediator countries that try to mediate, based on previous experience.
According to the report, negotiations between the US and Iran have failed twice. In June, Israel, with the support of US President Donald Trump, attacked Iran ahead of a round of talks, while in February, the US and Israel launched an operation after reaching an initial agreement on the nuclear issue.
"We don't want to be fooled again," one of the sources said, quoted by Axios as reported by Sputnik, Wednesday, March 25.
Iran has also reportedly told the authorities of Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey that the increased US military presence in the region is further strengthening Tehran's concerns that Trump's offer of peace talks may be just a strategy.
On Tuesday, Trump said he had appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner as the US negotiating team with Iran. He added that the negotiation process resumed on Sunday and showed Tehran's seriousness in seeking a resolution to the conflict.
However, on Monday, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf denied Trump's statement and stated that his country had not held talks with the US and assessed that there was fake news being used to influence the market.
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched an attack on a number of targets in Iran, including in Tehran, which caused damage and civilian casualties. Iran then retaliated by attacking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.
The US and Israel initially said the "preemptive" strike was necessary to counter the threat from Iran's nuclear program, but later reiterated a desire to see a change of power in the country.
