BPBD Makassar Responds to Citizen Reports on the Appearance of Sharks on Losari Beach

JAKARTA - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Makassar City responded to and reported residents by combing the location of the sighting of a large-sized shark swimming freely in the waters of Losari Beach, Ujungpandang District, Makassar, South Sulawesi.

"Patrolling has been carried out and it is true that there is shark activity passing by. The results of the identification, the type of shark fish is a basking shark that is migrating. He just passed by and was not aggressive towards humans," said Head of BPBD Makassar Fadli Tahar, Tuesday.

The patrol was carried out after a viral video was uploaded on social media showing a shark swimming in the area around Losari Beach next to Makassar Harbor.

The BPBD team deployed using a rubber boat has intensively combed a number of points. This is done to monitor the movement of the shark for several hours to ensure safety in the waters.

If you look at the characteristics of the sea animals, they are drying shark fish and are not dangerous for humans and are generally tame because they eat plankton.

However, even though it is not dangerous, it is still to be wary of and urged the public not to go to sea or bathe in the local waters.

"Although it is not dangerous, we appeal to the public and visitors on the beach to reduce their activities, remain vigilant and do not go into the sea. Safety is the most important thing," he emphasized.

Although this shark sighting video went viral on social media on Sunday (23/3), the Makassar BPBD is still monitoring periodically in the Losari waters for safety.

Although it is estimated that the shark has been swimming far out into the sea, the public is asked if they see anything suspicious to immediately report it to the official BPBD complaint channel for further action.

"It should be remembered that not everything that looks scary and dangerous, including the giant shark. Stay wise to keep yourself safe, because it is the most appropriate step," he advised.
